How to Get to Diocletians Palace: Airport, Port and Bus

How to get to Diocletian's Palace depends on your arrival point: SPU needs a road connection, while the port and main bus station lead towards the Riva on foot.

  • Palace tours and cellar visits compared
  • Public lanes and paid interiors explained
  • Practical arrival and opening information

How to get to Diocletian's Palace

When deciding how to get to Diocletian's Palace, separate the journey to Split from the final walk into the historic quarter. Split Airport, SPU, is in Kaštela, about 20 km from Split according to the airport. The main bus station, railway station and city ferry port are grouped by the waterfront. From this arrival area, the Riva provides an approach to the palace's southern side.

The palace is a lived-in part of the city, with public lanes and separately operated sights. Choose an arrival landmark rather than treating the whole complex as a single museum entrance. The guide to the palace gates helps distinguish the southern Brass Gate from the Golden Gate on the north side. For a visit to the paid substructures, read the cellars guide as well.

Airport shuttle and public bus

The airport shuttle connects the terminal's north parking area with platform 1 at Split's main bus station, beside the ferry port and railway station. The operator's November 2026 information gives a fare of EUR 10 one way or EUR 15 return. Its journey estimate is 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Treat this as the road leg, leaving separate time to collect luggage and continue on foot.

A digital QR ticket can be used without printing. Advance booking is recommended by the shuttle operator, especially in the main season. If buying in town, use the bus-station office rather than planning to buy from the driver on the journey towards the airport. Keep your booked direction and departure details together with your flight information.

Promet's public bus line 37 links Split, the airport and Trogir. It is a different service from the airport shuttle. Check the current airport fare with Promet and identify the arrival stop before choosing your onward route. Do not use the shuttle's port-side arrival instructions for line 37 without checking the actual stop on your service.

Taxi and transfer from Split Airport (SPU)

A taxi or booked transfer is another way to cover the road journey from SPU to Split. Use a permitted drop-off point agreed for your destination, then plan the remaining walk into the palace quarter. Give the driver your accommodation address or meeting-point address, rather than only the general name Diocletian's Palace. These identify different destinations within a historic district.

Before selecting a transfer, establish the quoted fare, the drop-off location and how the last part of the journey works with your bags. If you are heading straight to a walking tour, use its specific meeting instructions. A port-side start and a meeting at the Peristyle require different onward planning. For an overnight arrival, compare the approaches on the accommodation location guide.

Car rental and parking

Consider airport car collection primarily in relation to an onward road journey. For the palace visit itself, plan to park outside the historic core and finish on foot. Record the parking location separately from the palace entrance so that the return walk is easy to retrace. Check the rental collection arrangements at SPU as part of your wider route.

The municipal parking tariff checked in November 2026 distinguishes seasonal rates. At the Riva parking areas on Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda and Trg Franje Tuđmana, the first hour costs EUR 4 and each further hour EUR 5 from 1 May to 30 September. From 1 October to 30 April, the respective rates are EUR 2 and EUR 3. These are stepped hourly rates, so compare them with the length of your planned visit.

Bijankinijeva, Svačićeva and Vukovarska are listed at EUR 1.50 per hour in the same summer period and EUR 1 per hour in winter. These named parking areas have their own tariff context; use the posted terms at the chosen parking area. Leave room in your itinerary for finding a space and completing the walk.

From the ferry port, train or cruise port

The main bus station is at Obala kneza Domagoja 12, beside the city port and station. The shuttle operator describes the Old Town boundary as about five minutes away on foot. That estimate ends at the edge of the Old Town: plan the onward route to the Peristyle or your accommodation separately. From the Riva, the southern approach leads through Porta Aenea and the substructures towards the Peristyle.

The port-start walking tour lasts 90 minutes and uses a guide holding a blue umbrella at its cruise-port meeting point. It provides a guided palace and Old Town visit. Keep your ship's boarding arrangements separate from the sightseeing plan and leave a margin before joining another scheduled connection. For other starting points, compare palace walking tours.
