Understanding Diocletian's cellars

Diocletian's cellars are the substructures beneath the former imperial apartments. Their purpose was structural as well as practical: they supported the rooms above and also served as storage spaces. Because their layout reflects the imperial residential level, they help you imagine an upper floor that is not fully preserved. Visit them for that relationship between construction and palace life, as well as for the stone columns and vaults themselves.

There are different ways to encounter the lower level. The central passage connects the southern approach from the Riva with the route towards the Peristyle; lateral chambers form the museum visit. Walking through the passage and entering those rooms are separate experiences. For the rest of the complex, use the palace architecture guide and the guide to the gates to understand how the cellar level fits into your route.

Tickets and admission prices

The Split City Museum's 2026 tariff lists regular adult cellar admission at EUR 10. That is the museum admission tariff, while packages combining entry with an audio guide or a live guided walk provide additional services at their own prices. Start with the kind of visit you want: time to look at the architecture independently, interpretation on your phone, or a guide connecting the chambers with the palace above.

The same tariff lists EUR 8 for school pupils, students and Tourist Card holders. The EUR 8 pensioner category requires the Croatian documentation described in the museum tariff. A family ticket costs EUR 18 for parents with children under 15. Concessions and free categories have their own eligibility conditions, so bring the relevant documentation if using one. Treat these as cellar admission categories, keeping your cathedral and other interior plans separate.

This distinction matters when comparing a museum ticket with a broader palace walk. A guide stopping near the lower level may be explaining the building from the public route, while an admission-inclusive product takes you into the specified museum spaces. The three experiences presented here explicitly include cellar entry, but their interpretation, starting points and formats differ. Choose the services that serve your visit rather than treating every mention of the palace as the same admission product.

Audio guide or live guided tour

The substructures ticket with digital audio includes cellar admission and an audio guide to Split, with four routes and three days of audio access. English, Spanish and French are the available audio languages. A live guide and headphones are excluded. The product lists two hours as its duration; three days refers to audio-guide validity. This option works when you want an audio-led visit and a digital resource for the city alongside your cellar entry.

The history and filming-location walk includes a licensed guide and tickets for the west and east cellar chambers. Its published duration is 100 to 105 minutes and it starts above the Golden Gate by the Gregory of Nin statue, with a black umbrella identifying the guide. The experience combines Split history with scenes shown on a tablet and filming locations. Choose it when that specific combination of interpretation and chamber admission interests you.

The private walk with substructure admission lasts two hours and starts at the Brass Gate, Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda 22. It is priced per person and offers guiding in English, German, Italian and Spanish. Food and drinks are extra. Pickup is an available arrangement to settle individually, rather than a standard ride attached to every start. Compare the dedicated guiding format with the other private palace tours if a live explanation is your priority.

Winter visits and the route inside

The museum's winter calendar applies from 1 November 2026 to 28 March 2027. It gives daily cellar hours of 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Within that season the cellars close on 18 November 2026, 25 and 26 December 2026, 1 January 2027, 6 January 2027 and 28 March 2027. Use the opening-hours guide for the dated calendar when placing an indoor visit in your day.

From the Riva, approach through Porta Aenea, the Brass Gate. From the Peristyle, stairs lead towards the cellar level. These approaches explain the relationship between waterfront, lower passage and palace centre; choose the one that fits your starting point and any booked meeting place. Plan time for the museum chambers as a deliberate part of the visit, then continue with the public lanes or a guided palace walk.
